City of Merrill Reminds Residents to Be Mindful When Salting Icy Surfaces

MERRILL – The City of Merrill reminds residents that only one teaspoon of winter salt melt will pollute 5 gallons of Water, so be mindful when treating surfaces. Best practices include shoveling first and allowing the sun to melt surface ice and snow. Make sure to scatter salt leaving space between the grains. Use sand as an alternative method especially as temps go below 15 degrees when most salts are ineffective. Ask contractors if their staff attended a smart salting workshop and if not, encourage them to attend and become certified.
